If you’re heading to the state of Texas any time soon, be sure to check out the best dog parks in Austin.
Even though it’s not enclosed, Auditorium Shores Dog Park is popular among dog owners, both local and visiting. It’s located right along the water, which is great for pups who like to swim for sticks or jump in to cool off on a hot day. Auditorium Shores Dog Park is located centrally, right next to downtown Austin and boasts expansive city and water views for humans to enjoy as their dogs run around. However, there are several bike paths and walking trails that wrap around the park so if your dog isn’t comfortable around bikes or strangers, it may be best to opt for a more private, enclosed dog park.
Like most of the dog parks in Austin Texas, Domain Central Dog Park is very visually appealing, especially at sunset. Many locals describe this dog park as a “hidden gem”, popular among friendly dog owners. There’s plenty of room for you to throw the ball for Rover, as well as chairs for sitting and trees that provide shade on hot Texas days. It’s located within Domain Central Park and is fully fenced with double gates on both sides of the park, ensuring minimal escapees. There are poop bag dispensers onsite and fountains, however, they are not always working so bring your own water bottle and doggy bowl, just in case.
For water-loving two- and four-legged visitors, Red Bud Isle Dog Park is an absolute must-visit. This dog park is surrounded by water on three sides, which means you’ll need to pack a few towels to dry your pup off after a couple of dips. In addition to the lakefront pet-friendly park, there’s also 13-acres of recreational space where visitors and locals can kayak, hike, and canoe. It’s important to note that park visitors do have to pay for parking, which goes towards keeping the peninsula park clean and tidy. If your pup isn’t feeling particularly social and isn’t taking advantage of the off-leash dog park, you can take them on the nearby trails but remember that a leash is required.
Of all the dog parks in Austin, Texas, this one has the best name by far. Onion Creek District Park features a beautiful rocky creek where dogs are more than welcome to swim. Near the dog park, there are plenty of shaded trails that are frequented by walkers and bikers. The area is not fenced like many of the dog parks located in the downtown core, so be sure to keep an eye on your dog, especially if they are uncomfortable around bikes and groups of people. Onion Creek District Park provides the perfect backdrop for a picnic, so don’t forget to pack some ice-cold beverages, sandwiches, and snacks.
Shoal Creek deserves much more than a quick 30-minute or hour visit as it encompasses 76 acres of trails that should definitely be explored by visitors. When walking the trails, your pup must be leashed but there is an off-leash area located between 24th and 29th street. The Shoal Creek Greenbelt off-leash dog area is surrounded by lush greenery and there is a designated area for dogs weighing over 20 pounds. The park is the perfect combination of urban and country as it’s located along a gorgeous creek. It is open daily and there is no parking or entry fee, however, the park staff do ask that you closely watch your dog when they are enjoying the off-leash area.
Austin is absolutely filled to the brim with picturesque parks worthy of an afternoon picnic, and Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park is no exception. Hidden within the 293-acres of green space is an off-leash area where dogs can burn off any energy they are left with after exploring the trails and creek on-leash. There’s plenty of free parking for those looking to access the park, as well as restrooms, picnic tables, barbeques for public use, a pool, sports fields and ball courts, and sheltered areas for shade. All of the trails within Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park are shared with cyclists.
This off-leash dog park features a double gate for entry, separate areas for small and large breeds, and a shaded area for humans and furry friends to enjoy. This park is always pretty busy, which means there will be a selection of pups for your dog to play with. Norwood Estate Dog Park also has benches for sitting, water fountains and bowls, and is free of charge to visit.
This dog park is quite different from the rest on this list as it’s not found in a city park. Neighbors Dog Park was designed for dogs, providing them with a safe, clean space where they can meet friends, work on their tricks, and embrace training. A day pass is required, and your pup must be spayed or neutered, and up-to-date with their vaccines. In addition to a large fenced area for your dog to explore, there is some agility equipment for four-legged friends, benches, shaded spots, and a coffee shop where humans can get a tasty beverage or snack. The hours change based on season, so it’s best to check the dog park’s website before visiting.
Like Neighbors Dog Park, The Watering Bowl also offers a unique experience for dogs and people. This outdoor dog park (and bar!) boasts local craft beer, cider, wine, seltzers, and other beverages for humans over the age of 21 to sip on as their pup plays with others. Dogs must also be spayed or neutered and up-to-date with their shots. It’s also important that they are kept on-leash outside of the park area and that they have a friendly demeanor. While you drink your Mango Daydream Hard Bucha, your dog can gulp down a Pup Cup, Dog Beer, or Froyo. The hours at The Watering Bowl change depending on the season but updated hours can be found on the trendy establishment’s website.
